Defending champions Young Achievers produced another special performance to emerge winners of the second leg of this year’s Tradewind Tankers ‘True Champion’ Volleyball tournament which continued in Berbice recently.

The West Demerara side remained unbeaten throughout the day and in the process grabbed the Gy$20,000 top prize up for grabs for being the team with the most points at the end of the Sixes phase of the competition, while Port Mourant Jaguars One ended runners- up to take home Gy$10,000.
At the conclusion of the phase, six teams moved into the next round; while Albion, who finished in the cellar spot, was eliminated.
The teams moving forward are Young Achievers, Port Mourant Jaguars One, Castrol Strikers, Lusignan, Port Mourant Jaguars Two, and GuySuCo Training Centre (GTC).
At the end of the opening round of competition, Young Achievers closed with the most points, registering 171, followed by GTC on 161, Port Mourant Jaguars One on 151, Castrol Strikers with 148, Port Mourant Jaguars Two on 108, Lusignan on 105 and Albion 94.
That meant that Young Achievers will play Castrol Strikers in one of the semi-final matches, while GTC squares off with Port Mourant Jaguars One in the other, as the top four teams.
Castrol Strikers blew past Achievers 25- 14, 25-17 through some outstanding spiking and digging by Randy Adams, Christopher Ramsundar and company; while the Jaguars One also played impressively to upset the highly favoured GTC 25-13, 25-22. In the final, Young Achievers once again showed their superiority over all local teams with another consistent display to emerge winners 25-16, 25- 15.
Among those who witnessed the day’s proceedings were president of the Guyana Volleyball Federation Lennox Shuffler, and Berbice Association president Gregory Rambarran.
Shuffler, in his brief remarks, lauded Castrol Strikers for organising the tournament for a second year, and urged them to continue the work of helping to further develop the sport to acceptable standards.
The next format, which is the Fours, will be played on July 23 at West Demerara; while on August 20 the competition moves back to New Amsterdam, Berbice.
The semi-finals and final are set for September 3 and 10 respectively.
Meanwhile, the overall champion collects Gy$80,000, runners-up Gy$40,000 and third place finisher Gy$20,000.
